For the first time, qualifiers were held, with Brazil and Spain and making their debuts after winning qualifiers. Other stars of the event included Japan's Kenta Maeda, the USA's David Wright, the Dominican's Fernando Rodney and Pedro Strop, the Netherlands' Andrelton Simmons, Cuba's José Abreu, Canada's Michael Saunders, Taiwan's Chien-Ming Wang and South Korean Seung-hwan Oh.
